Eta Carinae is four million times brighter than the sun and is one of the biggest stars in the Milky Way. It is predicted to explode in a supernova relatively soon and when it does it will be the brightest object in the sky after the sun and the moon. If the axis of the star is directed towards Earth during the explosion our planet could be exposed to a lethal dose of gamma rays.
